About this cause

Keep the gate open.

Patriarchs Wildlife Sanctuary is 250 acres of land on the East coast of Flinders Island in Bass Strait. In 1977, it was set aside for preserving the natural world, in perpetuity, for the benefit of all Flinders Islanders and all their visitors.

While the sanctuary has Land for Wildlife status and high conservation values, it remains entirely privately run*, by frugal, diligent volunteers and friends who donate time, effort, machinery and material goods. But in this day and age, keeping the ship afloat means covering overheads; Public Liability insurance, wallaby food, gas, toilet paper, road gravel etc.

Basically, we need to come up with a few thousand dollars every year to keep the gates open.

We don’t want a formal “user pays system”. Some of our visitors can’t pay. But if every visitor who can afford it donated 5 dollars, that would be enough to keep our books in the black and our wallaby pellets stocked up. Most importantly, it shows us that our efforts are appreciated, it shows that you’re a good person, and it ensures future generations will be able to enjoy what you are experiencing today.

Thankyou.

*we definitely wouldn’t say no to money from the Government if they offered it!
